The Association of Masonic Museums, Libraries and Archives (AMMLA) is the international network of institutions dedicated to preserving, studying and communicating the heritage of Freemasonry.

Our members are Masonic and non-Masonic institutions rather than individuals: museums, libraries, archives, research centres and heritage organisations with collections or sources related to Masonic history and culture. Their collections, exhibitions, publications and educational activities provide reliable information and place Freemasonry in its historical, cultural and social contexts.

AMMLA does not represent Masonic obediences, but it supports Grand Lodges and Obediences in preserving and communicating their cultural heritage.

AMMLA matters

Masonic heritage is unique and widely dispersed. Preserving it requires specialised expertise and international cooperation. Museums, libraries and archives are among Freemasonry’s most visible and accessible institutions in the public sphere. Through research, exhibitions and educational initiatives, they make its history, values and cultural contributions accessible to members, researchers and the wider public.

AMMLA enables institutions to exchange experience, develop common solutions and collaborate across national borders. It helps to make reliable research and heritage more visible and accessible,  particularly at a time of fragmented historical knowledge and widespread misinformation.

AMMLA provides

  • an international network for institutions concerned with Masonic heritage;
  • collaboration in research, exhibitions, publications and heritage projects;
  • the exchange of expertise in collections management, conservation and digitisation;
  • a forum for addressing common challenges and developing innovative solutions;
  • cooperation with universities, cultural organisations and Masonic bodies.

AMMLA vision

AMMLA seeks to develop into an international centre of expertise for Masonic cultural heritage: connecting collections and people, encouraging cooperation and bringing together heritage institutions, researchers and Masonic organisations,  thereby promoting a better-informed understanding of Freemasonry throughout society.

Call for Members

AMMLA is continually looking to expand its network and warmly welcomes the chance to connect with potential new members.

Active membership is open to any private or public institution or organization that meets the following criteria:

  • Maintains a substantial Masonic collection of objects, books, documents, and/or artifacts;

  • Provides public access to the collection for consultation or lending;

  • Operates in accordance with international standards for museums, libraries, and/or archives;

  • Ensures stable and sustainable funding;

  • Serves as a recognized reference point for the history and culture of Freemasonry in its region.
